Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter is a museum with a difference.
Boats and vessels are our main themes. Many vessels have lived
exciting lives that tell of the development of modern Norway. You
won't find just old boats and other vessels, you will also be
able to see living crafts and skills being exercised. Crafts will
die if they are not practised, and we have concentrated our efforts
on creating a living environment where craftsmanship will live on
contributing to keeping cultural history alive and thriving.
At the Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter you will see old boats
and other vessels, traditional crafts and skills such as ships
carpentry, wooden boat building and rope-making. The centre is open
to visitors throughout the summer season, and there are guided
tours in Norwegian, English, German and French. The main activity
is the repair and renovation of old wooden boats worthy of
preservation. In addition we offer exhibitions and slide shows with
cultural history themes. You can relax in the pleasant cafe over a
cup of excellent tea or coffee accompanied by our very popular
home-made cakes. You will also find a good selection of souvenirs
here to take home with you. Those with a special interest in old
boats may like to visit the documentation office where books,
drawings, photographs and other material relating to the vessels
and crafts we work with can be seen.
