The keywords in Norwegian ship preservation are the authenticity
and entigrety of the vessel. Any work and replacements to be
carried out must take account of the vessel's history. This
serves to stress the importance of documentation and will be the
deciding factor in the planning and implementation of restoration
projects. HFS has two full- time and one half-time positions
dedicated to documentation and advisory services..
The distribution and strengthening of preservation
activities
The results of work carried out on documentation is distributed
through reports, books, seminars and the annual magazine,
Fartøyvern (Ships Preservation). "Gule sider" -
yellow pages – for ships preservation is currently being
compiled in the form of a data base. This will be available in the
Spring of 2000. Articles from earlier editions of Fartøyvern
can be downloaded from the Bookstore.
You may also order books from the site.
One very important task is to search for information on
shipbuilding methods, both in general and in particular for vessels
that are undergoing repair and restoration. Typical sources of such
information are elderly craftsmen, archive materials, photographs,
drawings, etc. The documentation is used by the workers engaged to
carry out specific tasks and general commissions on the vessels.
Another important task is to carry out inspections of vessels
commissioned by public or private clients. Documentation of
disassembly and repair/rehabilitation processes provides valuable
knowledge, and the material obtained is distributed through
reports. The task of constructing a multi-faceted archive of
information sources (photographs, books, drawings, interviews, and
artefacts etc.) is ongoing and of great value in the work of ships
preservation.
Consulting and advisory services
The documentation office also accepts external consulting
commissions of various types. We have among other tasks compiled
documentation reports for the local passenger steamer D/S Stord 1,
the coastal passenger steamer D/S Gamle Rogaland, the coastal cargo
steamer D/S Hestmanden and the four-masted bark S/S Statsraad
Lehmkuhl. We accept commissions to inspect vessels with a view to
preservation and restoration, and the development of projects for
museums and other cultural institutions in the field of boat and
ship conservation.
